Hello there Readers!
I was listening to the Cortex podcast’s new mini-series of State of the Workflow with the guest David Pierce. David is The Verge’s Editor at Large, and host of the Podcast, while also the writer for their newsletter called Installer. Both Installer and Cortex host Mike Hurley’s blog, The Enthusiast, is what I wanted these R&R pieces to become albeit more for myself, about things I like in the month. State of the Workflow is a good series. If you are productivity nerd like me, you’ll be intrigued to hear what several people use for apps and their processes. The best tip I got was using Apple Shortcuts. Jesus I didn’t realize how good Apple Shortcuts was. While I am on the go, my main focus is inputing content. I’ll review later when I need to. But for the moment, I just need to put my thoughts or ideas, somewhere quick. Everything feels like it takes too long to input stuff from Obsidian to Apple Notes. Shortcuts has been a game changer for me.
Speaking of Game Changer, Dropout.TV just finish the recent series of Dimension 20; Cloudward Ho! It follows the cast of the intrepid heroes in the steampunk genre with a more pulp feel than a political steampunk. Less Goblin Emperor more Indiana Jones. The crew also did an amazing job with the art, props, minis, and the big bad that came onto the field in the final battle. It was a fun journey to watch! There is also an Adventuring Party where they talk how they make the show and what came into making the show.
I was also reading the GM’s book for the Ruins of Symbaroum 5e. Surprisingly I enjoyed this book more than I thought! Has some greatadvice on troupe play, battles of war for a 5e 2014 game, and examples of how treasure can lead to their own adventure. Each treasure item has a small idea of an adventure that can be used in your game. I specially loved the examples of conflicts to keep in mind while building game worlds. That’s just good advice to keep in mind for whatever system you decide to play.
I was also able to ran a few one-shot sessions. One of them was from the Free RPG day. I don’t plan to continue the Free RPG day products posts. I get more from talking about the games and adventures after running them, instead of just my thoughts on quick skim. That begins said, I have drafted my thoughts on all of them. Though I plan to use them more as a reference, going back to see how my impressions were versus how I felt after playing them. Two I do not plan to give their own posts, but are amazing adventures are the two Call of Cthulhu I ran. The first was The Dare, and My Little Sister . It felt appropriate with Halloween and such to run something from Call of Cthulhu. If you are planning to run this, Seth Skorkosky Youtube channel has great review and tips on them. They do have spoilers so beware if you want to play a game.
I got to play an Outgunned one-shot. My Saturday group wasn’t able to meet up and so the GM ran us through a single shot adventure they created. It was such a fun session playing through action movie game. The system is built to do some cool epic action moments with room for some zany wackiness. I was able to play a 62 year old taxi driver that had to save the mayor with a conspiracy theorist and girl scout. On my way home, all i could thing was how great the system lends it self to the crazy action movie and maybe I could re-flavor it for a zombie action game, something akin to Left 4 Dead or Dead Rising.
