R&R of August 2025

August is over and September comes today. My biggest project was what I called Build-gust. Where I build all the miniatures I’ve had in boxes to try to deal with the large boxes cluttering the small space I have. The list included Death Guard’s Combat Patrol, A Death Guard Battle Force,  Necromantic Horror Team, The  Necron Kill Team, Vespid Kill Team, and two Necromunda gangs. It was…a lot. While I was able to catch up on shows, I also felt kind of bad focusing so much on this one part of the hobby. I  enjoyed several parts and I probably should taken my time.  I also found time to camp for I think the first time in my adult life. I enjoyed the detox from social media and the addiction to always be on computers. I did experience something that gave me idea to write a story based on it. I’ll see when I get to writing it

RPG hobby

I did finish my reading of Ruins of Symbaroum 5e Player’s Guide by Free League Publishing. This was a difficult read as it is a bit lore heavy at the front which is always the hardest for me to read. I have read the original Symbaroum with it’s own system. I’ve ran a one shot, and enjoyed what I played. I do want to revisit the world, though it’ll be a lot easier with a 5e game first.

I also finished the Land of Eem Core Rulebook. This was a colorful fun RPG to read through. Everything is filled with color and pop, though it has those slightly darker undertones that can be found in it’s inspirations such as Adventure time. This was actually a quick read for me and I am already ready the quick start to run for a quick one-shot with friends.

My Fabula Ultima game didn’t meet up much this month except for a single session. It was enough to start what I call, Arc 3 – Death and Ruins. The first session only had 2 players which I forgot is fine for an Tabletop night. It leans itself to a bigger focus. I personally have never like the advice from other Tabletop RPG personalities to play on no matter what. For my friend group, they can get invested in the story or what’s going on. If they ask to wait, I tend to wait and rather just run a side-quest or a one shot of another system. Though the older I get and the busier people’s lives get, I fully get why that advice goes around.

Books:

I have finished my reading of The Power Broker by Robert Caro, I’ve also finished my journey with the 99% Invisible’s book club podcast journey through the book. I’m still racking my head around the book. it’s been bookmarked, and sitting on my desk still. I feel like it might get another read through in a year or two. It’s quite a testament to investigative journalism and story telling.

My next big book that I’ll be reading: The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman.

I also read the Necromunda Ash Waste book. Yes, I read this after building the minis. Those familiar with Necromunda realize I have made a mistake. Thankfully the friends I play with do not play with what you see, is what you get. It also does not have an ISBN so I can only keep track of it in my CAWPILE system. Which is fine, but my reading stats are going to be kind of weird at the end of the year.

Videos/movies I enjoyed for the month as well:

The journalists as People Make Games goes back to talk about the messy aftermath of Disco Elysium along with discussing the criticism from their first documentary about the issues. It’s an interestng dive to go into creative ownership.

Alex from 52 Miniatures had a video where he travel to the Ukraine to talk about a small war club and the hobby in the Ukraine during the time a war. It’s been in my watch later playlist for too long. It’s a gentle reminder of the escapism we crave in order to kind of get through this history.

I saw the new Naked Gun movie early in the month. It did rest a bit on it’s previous films, remixing a few jokes of the past to give new life, and taking ideas from other similar satire comedies, with it’s own twist. There were several times i found myself crying with laughter before the end.

I also got conviced to submit myself to War of the Worlds. The one on prime with Ice Cube. I was told this was one of the worst movies made. Yeah, it’s bad. I was building minis at the start of the minis, but I had to put them down and rewind it since it was such a wreck. A car accident you can’t help but watch as you drive by. It was supposed to be the last thing I watched for the night and i could not go to bed with that being the last thing I saw for the night. If i died and my last movie was Ice Cube’s War of the Worlds, I would be pissed. It wasn’t a funny in the so bad it’s good, but…like…what did i just watch? Was this film during COVID lock downs? There was a budget to this?!

Alright with that being it, I’m off to start my September. I’m hoping I can run a few one shots, and catch up with new albums that came out this year.
